Banger sunsets from the island 🌅
So humbled to spend time paddling with @julie_chandelier and this family of Orca on Monday. I’ve had some close encounters before but nothing quite like this.. still can’t really believe it!

Orca mother and calf at Takapuna Beach two years ago. This interaction really changed the way I feel about the ocean. It’s so easy to forget that our inner city beaches in Auckland are a food source for such an incredible apex predator. This day the pod were hunting eagle rays in shallow water giving people on the beach a front row ticket. My first interaction up close with an Orca was with these two. As the mother swam along side my board, she made eye contact as she presented her freshly caught stingray in her mouth. I don’t have any photos of this moment as I’d never been approached by an Orca before so I was less than comfortable. As the mother and calf passed by within a foot of me all anxiety lifted as euphoria set in. This exchange demonstrated how intelligent Orca are, I can only describe it as looking into the eyes of another person. There was a calmness and a sense of understanding in her glance. Something I’ll never forget. Respect is what these animals want and deserve so if you do see them please follow the regulations of @docgovtnz No wake speed and at least a 50m distance, recommendations of common sense are in place to keep a wider berth if a calf is present. I was incredibly lucky to get this close #orca #takapunabeach
Quite possibly the best sunset I’ve ever witnessed. Absolutely top 3 ever and I have no idea what the other two are. I feel lucky to have enjoyed it with friends, atop the highest point on the island, in my favourite place on earth, Aotea.

My favourite image from today photographing Australasian Gannets at Otakamiro Point, Muriwai. Those that hatch here will undertake their very first flight 3000 kilometres to our neighbours Australia. Interestingly though, they always return back to New Zealand to find a nest and mate. Once back, they stick with their mate for life and will never fly back to Australia. No surprises there 😂 #aussies #purenewzealand
